## Short answer

As a Christian, most of your purpose is already revealed: you were made by God and for God (Colossians 1:16), to love God and your neighbour (Matthew 22:37–39), make disciples (Matthew 28:19–20), become like Jesus and do everything for His glory (1 Corinthians 10:31). Your specific calling — the good works God prepared for you (Ephesians 2:10) — is usually found where your gifts (1 Peter 4:10), your burden, your open doors and the confirmation of mature believers meet. It is bigger than a career, and it grows through faithfulness in small things (Luke 16:10).

“What's my purpose?” It's one of the most searched questions there is — and one of the most anxious. Many Christians feel there's a single, hidden calling out there, and if they miss it, they've missed their life.

The Bible offers something far more freeing. Most of your purpose is already revealed. The rest is discovered by faithfully walking in what you already know.

## Start with why you exist

Before you ask what you should _do_, the Bible tells you why you _are_. “All things were created through him and for him” (Colossians 1:16). You were made by God and for God. Your purpose starts with Him, not with a job title.

## Your purpose is mostly already clear

Every Christian shares a general calling — and it's the foundation for everything else:

- **Love God** with all your heart, soul and mind (Matthew 22:37).
- **Love your neighbour** as yourself (Matthew 22:39).
- **Make disciples** where you are (Matthew 28:19–20).
- **Become like Jesus** (Romans 8:29).
- **Do everything for God's glory** — “whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).

> He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
>
> — Micah 6:8

If you're doing these, you are already living on purpose — whether you're a CEO, a student, a stay-at-home parent or between jobs.

## Then your specific calling

> For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
>
> — Ephesians 2:10

God has prepared particular good works for you. You find them where four things meet:

1. **Your gifts.** “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another” (1 Peter 4:10). What do you do well that serves others? What do people consistently come to you for?
2. **Your burden.** What breaks your heart? Nehemiah wept when he heard Jerusalem's walls were broken (Nehemiah 1:3–4) — and that burden became his life's work.
3. **Your opportunities.** What doors are actually open in front of you? God often speaks through circumstances (Revelation 3:8).
4. **Your community's confirmation.** What do mature believers who know you see in you? Calling is rarely confirmed alone (Acts 13:2–3).

> You don't find your purpose by staring at the horizon. You find it by being faithful with what's already in your hands.

## Purpose is bigger than a career

Your calling includes your work, but it isn't limited to it. It covers your family, your church, your friendships, your neighbourhood and your influence. Your job may change many times; your purpose doesn't. And whatever your work is, it can be worship (see [Your Work Is Worship](https://www.iamreborn.net/blog/kingdom-business-your-work-is-not-separate-from-your-worship)).

## Purpose grows through faithfulness

Jesus said, “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much” (Luke 16:10). Joseph was faithful as a slave and a prisoner before he was faithful as a ruler. David was faithful with sheep before he was faithful with a kingdom. If you're waiting for your big calling before you take your small responsibilities seriously, you have it backwards.

## Five steps to start this week

1. **Pray for direction.** Ask God plainly to show you the good works He's prepared for you (James 1:5).
2. **Write down your gifts, burdens and open doors.** Look for where they overlap.
3. **Ask three people who know you well** what they see in you.
4. **Serve somewhere now.** Calling is usually discovered in motion, not in theory.
5. **Write a three-year vision.** Put your sense of calling on paper with concrete goals (the [3 Year Growth Mandate](https://www.iamreborn.net/3yearmandate) walks you through it).

**Finding your purpose, in short**

- **You exist for God** (Colossians 1:16).
- **Most of your purpose is revealed:** love God, love people, make disciples, become like Jesus.
- **Your specific calling** sits where your gifts, burden, opportunities and community's confirmation meet.
- **It's bigger than a job.**
- **It grows through faithfulness** in small things (Luke 16:10).

## Frequently asked questions

### What is God's purpose for my life?

Every believer's purpose is to know and love God, love others, make disciples, become like Jesus and glorify God in everything (Matthew 22:37–39; Matthew 28:19–20; 1 Corinthians 10:31). Within that, God has prepared specific good works for you (Ephesians 2:10).

### How do I find my calling?

Look where four things overlap: your gifts (what you do well that serves others), your burden (what breaks your heart), your opportunities (open doors) and the confirmation of mature believers who know you. Then serve faithfully where you are.

### Is my purpose the same as my career?

No. Your calling includes your work but also your family, church, friendships and community. Jobs may change; your purpose of loving God and people doesn't.

### What if I don't know my calling yet?

Be faithful with what's in front of you — Jesus said whoever is faithful in a little will be faithful in much (Luke 16:10). Pray for wisdom (James 1:5), serve somewhere now, and ask trusted believers what they see in you.
