## Short answer

Prayer is not a performance and Jesus explicitly told us to use fewer words, because your Father already knows what you need before you ask. When you have nothing of your own, use the five-part pattern He gave — who God is, what you want Him to do, what you need today, forgiveness both directions, and protection — or borrow the psalms and pray a line back. Romans 8:26 says the Spirit intercedes for us when we do not know what to pray, so being lost for words is assumed rather than disqualifying.

A surprising number of Christians quietly believe they are bad at prayer. Usually because they have absorbed the idea that prayer is a performance — that there is a register you are supposed to reach, and their honest, halting sentences do not qualify.

Jesus addressed this directly, and his instruction was to use fewer words.

> And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
>
> — Matthew 6:7–8

Read the reason he gives. Not _because God is not listening_ — because He already knows. Prayer is not information transfer. It is a relationship in which you are already known.

## The shortest prayers in Scripture

If eloquence were the requirement, the Bible would look very different. Some of its most consequential prayers are barely sentences.

- **“Lord, save me!”** — Peter, sinking (Matthew 14:30).
- **“Have mercy on me, a sinner.”** — the tax collector Jesus said went home justified (Luke 18:13).
- **“I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”** — a father who was honest about both halves (Mark 9:24).
- **“Remember me when you come into your kingdom.”** — a dying criminal, answered the same day (Luke 23:42).

> Not one of those is impressive. Every one of them worked.

## Use the pattern Jesus gave

When the disciples asked to be taught, Jesus handed them a structure rather than a script. It is short enough to use as a frame when you have nothing of your own.

1. **Who God is.** “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.” Start with Him, not with the list.
2. **What you want Him to do.** “Your kingdom come, your will be done.” Aligning before asking.
3. **What you need today.** “Give us today our daily bread.” Concrete, present, unembarrassed.
4. **Forgiveness, both directions.** “Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.”
5. **Protection.** “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”

Walk those five in your own words and you have prayed a complete prayer. It takes about ninety seconds and it never runs dry, because your daily bread and your debts change every day.

## Four ways in when you are empty

### Pray the psalms

This is the oldest answer and still the best. The psalms are the prayer book of God's people, and they cover the full range — praise, grief, rage, confusion, dread, gratitude. When you have no words, borrow theirs. Read one out loud and let it become yours.

### Say the true thing, not the nice thing

“God, I don't want to talk to you today and I don't know why” is a real prayer. A great deal of Scripture is people telling God exactly how it is. Composed prayer is not more spiritual than honest prayer; it is often just quieter about the same problem.

### Pray names, not concepts

Vague intercession is hard to sustain. A list of names is not. Three people, prayed for by name, daily — that alone will keep a prayer life alive through a dry season.

### Let silence count

Sitting with God without producing anything is prayer. If you struggle here, set a timer for five minutes so you are not also managing the clock.

> In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.
>
> — Romans 8:26

That verse is worth memorising if you feel unqualified. Scripture assumes there will be times you do not know what to pray, and it says the Spirit covers exactly that gap.

## Build a rhythm you will keep

Most prayer lives collapse for the same reason most habits do: the plan was designed for an ideal day. Attach prayer to something already fixed — the kettle, the commute, the walk from the car — and keep the small version available for bad days.

**A five-minute frame you can use today**

- **One minute:** tell God one true thing about how you actually are.
- **One minute:** read a psalm out loud and pray a line of it back.
- **One minute:** three names, out loud.
- **One minute:** one thing you need today, and one thing you are grateful for.
- **One minute:** silence. Ask nothing. Just stay.

## You are not being graded

The parable Jesus told about prayer contrasted a polished religious man with a man who could not lift his eyes and managed seven words. It was the second man who went home right with God.

So pray badly. Pray briefly. Pray the same tired sentence you prayed yesterday. You are speaking to a Father who already knows, already loves you, and would rather have your honest fragment than your best impression of someone else's prayer.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does God care if my prayers are short or clumsy?

Jesus warned against many words, not few. Some of the most consequential prayers in Scripture are barely sentences: 'Lord, save me!', 'Have mercy on me, a sinner', 'I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!', 'Remember me when you come into your kingdom.' None are impressive; all were answered.

### What is a simple structure for prayer?

The pattern Jesus gave: start with who God is, then what you want Him to do, then what you need today, then forgiveness in both directions, then protection. Walked in your own words that takes about ninety seconds and never runs dry, because your daily bread and your debts change daily.

### What do I do when I feel nothing?

Pray the psalms — they are the prayer book of God's people and cover praise, grief, rage, confusion and gratitude. Say the true thing rather than the nice thing; 'God, I don't want to talk to you today' is a real prayer. Pray names rather than concepts. And let silence count.

### Does the Bible say anything about not knowing how to pray?

Directly. Romans 8:26: 'We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.' Scripture assumes there will be times you have no words and says the Spirit covers exactly that gap.
