## Short answer

Sharing your faith means being a witness, not a salesperson: you tell honestly what Jesus has done in your life, and the results belong to God (1 Corinthians 3:6). Start with the people already around you — your oikos — as Jesus told the man He healed to "go home to your own people" (Mark 5:19). Prepare a three-minute story (before, how, since) and a one-sentence summary of the gospel, then ask genuine questions, listen, offer rather than push, pray for people by name, and invite them in. 1 Peter 3:15 asks us to do it "with gentleness and respect."

Most Christians want to share their faith and almost never do. Not because they do not care, but because every picture they have of it feels awkward: a stranger on a street corner, a pamphlet, a script that ends with a stunned silence.

The good news is that the New Testament almost never describes it that way.

## You are a witness, not a salesperson

A salesperson has to close. A witness only has to tell the truth about what they saw. That is the role Jesus gives His followers — and it takes an enormous weight off.

> One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!
>
> — John 9:25

The man Jesus healed in John 9 could not answer the Pharisees' theology. He did not need to. He told them what happened to him, and nobody could argue with that.

You do not have to win debates. You have to be honest about what Jesus has done in your life. The results belong to God.

> I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.
>
> — 1 Corinthians 3:6

## Start with the people already around you

When Jesus freed a man from torment, the man begged to follow Him. Jesus sent him home instead:

> Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.
>
> — Mark 5:19

Your mission field is not somewhere else. It is the handful of people you already see every week — family, colleagues, neighbours, the friend you text most. The Greek word for this circle is _oikos_, and it is where most people who come to faith first hear about Jesus: from someone who already loves them.

> People rarely argue their way into the Kingdom. They are usually loved there by someone they trust.

## Tell your story in three minutes

The most useful thing you can prepare is not an argument. It is your own story, short enough to tell over a coffee. Three parts:

1. **Before.** What your life was like, or what you were looking for. Honest, not dramatic.
2. **How.** How you came to trust Jesus. What actually changed your mind or your heart.
3. **Since.** What is different now — not perfect, but different. Be specific.

Write it down once. Say it out loud to a Christian friend. You will be surprised how often, once you have it ready, a natural moment appears.

## Know the good news in one sentence

If someone asks what you actually believe, you want a clear answer rather than a vague one. Something like this:

**God made us for Himself; we all turned away and cannot fix it on our own; Jesus lived the life we could not, died in our place and rose again; and anyone who turns and trusts Him is forgiven and made new.**

That is the heart of it — the message Paul was "not ashamed of" because it is "the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes" (Romans 1:16).

## How to actually talk about it

> Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.
>
> — 1 Peter 3:15

- **Ask before you tell.** "Do you have any faith background?" or "What do you make of Jesus?" Genuine questions open more doors than statements.
- **Listen for real.** Most people have a story about faith — often a painful one. Hearing it well earns the right to share yours.
- **Offer, do not push.** "Can I tell you why it matters to me?" is a question they can say no to. Respect the answer.
- **Pray for them by name.** Before you ever say a word, and long after. Conversation is your part; changing hearts is God's.
- **Invite, simply.** To church, to a meal with Christian friends, to read one gospel with you. Belonging often comes before believing.

## When they are not interested

Sometimes they will not be, and that is fine. Stay their friend. Keep loving them the same way you did before you mentioned Jesus — that consistency says more than any argument. Paul's advice was to "make the most of every opportunity" with conversation that is "always full of grace" (Colossians 4:5–6). Grace includes knowing when to leave it with God.

**Start this week**

- Write down five names — people in your oikos who do not yet follow Jesus.
- Pray for each of them by name every day this week.
- Write your three-minute story: before, how, since.
- Ask one of the five a genuine question about faith, and just listen.
- Invite one of them to something: church, a meal, a walk.

Sharing your faith is not a performance you need to be good at. It is love with words attached. **Start with one person, and one honest conversation.**

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I start a conversation about faith?

Ask before you tell. A genuine question like "Do you have any faith background?" or "What do you make of Jesus?" opens more doors than a statement — and then really listen to the answer.

### What should I say when I share my testimony?

Three short parts: what your life was like before, how you came to trust Jesus, and what is different since. Keep it honest and specific rather than dramatic, and short enough to tell over a coffee.

### What is the gospel in one sentence?

God made us for Himself; we all turned away and cannot fix it on our own; Jesus lived the life we could not, died in our place and rose again; and anyone who turns and trusts Him is forgiven and made new.

### What if someone is not interested?

Stay their friend and keep loving them exactly as you did before. Colossians 4:5–6 asks for conversation "always full of grace," and grace includes knowing when to leave it with God and keep praying.
