## Short answer

The armor of God in Ephesians 6:10–18 is Paul's picture of how believers stand firm against the devil's schemes in a spiritual battle — one fought not against people but against spiritual forces of evil (Ephesians 6:12). Its six pieces are the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith that extinguishes the evil one's flaming darts, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Paul ends with prayer at all times in the Spirit, which keeps the armour on.

Paul wrote his letter to the Ephesians from prison, almost certainly chained to a Roman soldier. As he finished it, he looked at the armour in front of him and used it to describe something every believer needs: how to stand firm in a spiritual battle.

> Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.
>
> — Ephesians 6:10–11

## First: know what you're fighting

> For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
>
> — Ephesians 6:12

Your enemy isn't your spouse, your boss, the other political party or the person who hurt you. People can be used by evil, but they are not the real enemy. The battle is spiritual — against lies, accusation, temptation and fear — and it's fought with spiritual weapons.

Notice too the word _stand_. It comes up again and again in this passage (Ephesians 6:11, 13, 14). The goal isn't to win the war — Jesus has already won it (Colossians 2:15). The goal is to hold your ground in the victory He secured.

## The six pieces

### 1. The belt of truth

A soldier's belt held everything else together. Truth does the same: the truth of God's Word, and truthfulness in your own life. The enemy is a liar (John 8:44); the first defence is knowing what is true — and refusing to live a double life.

### 2. The breastplate of righteousness

The breastplate guarded the heart. Your protection here is the righteousness of Christ given to you (2 Corinthians 5:21), and the integrity that grows from it. When accusation comes — _you're a fraud, God's done with you_ — you stand in His righteousness, not your record.

### 3. Shoes of the gospel of peace

Roman soldiers wore studded sandals that gave them grip. The gospel gives you footing: peace with God through Jesus (Romans 5:1). It also makes you ready to move — carrying that peace to others.

### 4. The shield of faith

Paul says it extinguishes “all the flaming darts of the evil one” (Ephesians 6:16). Those darts are the sudden thoughts of doubt, fear, lust or despair. Faith — trusting what God has said over what you feel — puts them out. (See [What Is Faith?](https://www.iamreborn.net/blog/what-is-faith))

### 5. The helmet of salvation

The helmet protects the head — your mind. The settled assurance that you belong to God guards your thinking when the battle gets loud. (Read [How Do I Know If I'm Really Saved?](https://www.iamreborn.net/blog/how-do-i-know-if-im-really-saved))

### 6. The sword of the Spirit

The only offensive weapon in the list is “the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17). When Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness, Jesus answered three times with Scripture: “It is written” (Matthew 4:1–11). Knowing specific verses gives you something specific to say when a specific lie comes.

> The armour isn't your strength. It's God's — Isaiah pictures God Himself wearing righteousness as a breastplate and salvation as a helmet (Isaiah 59:17). You're putting on what He wears.

## The piece people forget: prayer

Paul doesn't stop at the sword. He goes straight on: “praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication” (Ephesians 6:18). Prayer is how the whole armour is put on and kept on. And he says to pray “for all the saints” — this is a battle fought shoulder to shoulder, not alone.

## How to put on the armour each day

1. **Truth:** read a passage of Scripture before your phone. Confess any area where you're living a lie.
2. **Righteousness:** thank God that you stand in Christ's righteousness, not your own.
3. **Peace:** remember you have peace with God — and ask who you could carry it to today.
4. **Faith:** name the fear or doubt you're facing and choose to trust a specific promise.
5. **Salvation:** settle it again: “I belong to God.”
6. **The Word:** carry one verse into the day for the battle you know is coming.
7. **Prayer:** pray for yourself and for one brother or sister by name.

**The armor of God, in short**

- **The enemy** is spiritual, not people (Ephesians 6:12).
- **The goal** is to stand in Christ's victory (Ephesians 6:11, 13).
- **Belt** of truth · **breastplate** of righteousness · **shoes** of the gospel of peace.
- **Shield** of faith · **helmet** of salvation · **sword** of the Spirit, the word of God.
- **Prayer** keeps it all on (Ephesians 6:18).
