## Short answer

Jesus gave the Great Commission a geography, and it starts where you already are. Acts 1:8 names Jerusalem first — the city they were standing in — then the surrounding region, then everywhere. Local mission is not the beginner's version of real mission; it is the entry point Jesus named, and usually the harder one, because distance is comfortable and proximity costs something.

Jesus' final instruction was not _understand this_ or _agree with this_. It was a verb.

> Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
>
> — Matthew 28:19–20

Two things in that are easy to miss. First, the goal is **disciples**, not converts to a preference — people who go on to make other disciples. Second, there's a promise attached. You are not sent alone.

## Jesus gave the mission a geography

In Acts, He is even more specific, and the order matters enormously.

> You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
>
> — Acts 1:8

Jerusalem first. The city they were standing in. The one where people knew their names, remembered their failures, and would be least impressed by their new confidence. Then the surrounding region. Then the culturally awkward neighbours. Then everywhere.

Which means local mission is not the beginner's version of real mission. It is the entry point Jesus named, and it's the harder one — because distance is comfortable and proximity costs something.

> It is easier to feel burdened for a nation you will never visit than for the neighbour whose name you have not learned.

## What loving a city actually involves

Strip away the language and it comes down to a few unglamorous commitments.

- **Presence.** Being somewhere regularly enough that people stop being strangers.
- **Attention.** Noticing who is missing, struggling, new, or quietly alone.
- **Practical help.** Doing something with your hands that costs you time.
- **Words.** Eventually, actually saying why. Kindness alone doesn't explain itself.
- **Staying.** Not leaving when it gets boring or when the need stops being urgent.

That last one separates a project from a mission. Projects end when attention moves on. Mission stays because it was never driven by attention in the first place.

## Bread and hope belong together

There's an old, unhelpful argument about whether the church should meet physical needs or preach the gospel. Jesus never made anybody choose. He healed, He fed, He wept, He taught — one ministry, not a strategy with a warm-up act.

> Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?
>
> — James 2:15–16

So carrying water into a flooded street is not the preamble to the spiritual work. It _is_ the spiritual work, done with your hands. And equally, meeting a need while never explaining the hope behind it leaves the most important thing unsaid.

## When a whole city gathers

There's something that happens when the church stops being a collection of separate buildings and becomes visible together in one place. It's not that God works better in crowds. It's that a city can suddenly see what it had assumed was fringe.

That's the heart behind the Jesus Festival — open-air, public, unembarrassed worship, with a clear invitation attached. Not a concert with a prayer at the end. A city being handed an actual opportunity to meet Jesus.

## The honest starting point

You don't need a platform, a title, or a plan for your whole city. You need to be willing, and to be somewhere.

**This week**

- Learn one neighbour's name that you don't currently know. Then pray for them.
- Do one practical, inconvenient thing for someone who can't repay you. Tell nobody.
- Invite one person into something ordinary — a meal, a walk, a gathering.
- Ask God for one bold opportunity, and take it when it comes.

A renewed spirit, mind, body and purpose that never leaves your own house is just a well-run life. Poured out on the street you already live on, it becomes a Kingdom.
