## Short answer

The Bible does not treat depression as a lack of faith. Elijah asked God to take his life (1 Kings 19:4), Paul “despaired of life itself” (2 Corinthians 1:8), and many psalms are honest laments — yet God met each of them with care. He gave Elijah rest, food, a gentle word and companions. Scripture promises the Lord is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18), and seeking help from a doctor, counsellor or pastor is wise, not faithless. If you are thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8 in Canada or the US, or call 911.

**If you are thinking about ending your life, please stop reading and reach out now.** In Canada and the US you can call or text [9-8-8](https://www.iamreborn.nettel:988) (Suicide Crisis Helpline), any time, day or night. If you are in immediate danger, call [911](https://www.iamreborn.nettel:911). You matter, and you don't have to carry this alone.

Depression can make God feel far away and faith feel like something other people have. Some Christians carry an extra weight on top of it: the fear that being depressed means they're doing faith wrong. Scripture says something very different — and much kinder.

This article is not medical advice and is not a substitute for a doctor or counsellor. It's what the Bible says to someone in the dark, and some practical steps toward help.

## Depression is not a lack of faith

Some of the most faithful people in the Bible went through deep darkness. Elijah, right after one of the greatest victories in the Old Testament, sat under a tree and prayed, _“It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life”_ (1 Kings 19:4). Paul wrote that he was so utterly burdened beyond his strength that he “despaired of life itself” (2 Corinthians 1:8). Jesus Himself said in Gethsemane, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death” (Matthew 26:38).

None of them were rebuked for it. Feeling crushed is not proof that God has left you or that your faith has failed. It's proof that you're human, living in a broken world.

## The Bible gives you words for the dark

Many scholars count around a third of the Psalms as laments — honest prayers of pain, confusion and protest. God put them in His book on purpose. They give you permission to pray what's actually true, not what you think you should feel.

> Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.
>
> — Psalm 42:11

Notice what the psalmist does: he talks _to_ his own soul. He doesn't pretend he isn't cast down. He names it, and then he points himself, weakly, toward hope. “I _shall again_ praise him” — not yet, but again. That's often what faith looks like in depression: not feeling better, but holding on to _again_.

Psalm 88 goes even further — it ends in darkness, with no resolution at all. And it's still in the Bible. Even a prayer that only says “God, it's dark and I don't understand” is a prayer He receives.

> The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
>
> — Psalm 34:18

## How God cared for Elijah

When Elijah asked to die, God didn't give him a sermon. He let him sleep. Then an angel woke him and gave him food and water — and let him sleep again, and fed him again (1 Kings 19:5–8). Only after that did God speak to him, not in the wind or the earthquake or the fire, but in “the sound of a low whisper” (1 Kings 19:12). Then He gave Elijah companions and a next step.

That's a picture of how God cares for the whole person. Rest. Food. Gentleness. People. A next step. Caring for your body and mind is not unspiritual. It's often exactly how God meets you.

## Getting help is not faithless

- **See a doctor.** Depression can have physical causes and treatments. Medication, when a doctor recommends it, is no more a failure of faith than wearing glasses or taking insulin.
- **Talk to a counsellor.** A good counsellor — ideally one who respects your faith — can help you understand what's happening and find a way through.
- **Tell your pastor or a trusted believer.** You were never meant to carry this alone. Let someone sit with you in it (Galatians 6:2).
- **Keep your church family close,** even when you don't feel like going. Being around God's people when you can't feel God is part of how He holds you.

## Small things that help on hard days

1. **Pray one honest sentence.** “God, I'm not okay.” That counts. (Here's [how to pray when you don't know what to say](https://www.iamreborn.net/blog/how-to-pray-when-you-dont-know-what-to-say).)
2. **Read one psalm of lament.** Psalm 13, 42 or 88. Let them say what you can't.
3. **Look after your body.** Sleep, a real meal, a short walk in daylight. Elijah's recovery started there. (See [why sleep is a spiritual discipline](https://www.iamreborn.net/blog/sleep-is-a-spiritual-discipline).)
4. **Reach out to one person today.** A text is enough.
5. **Write down one true thing about who God says you are** — and read it when your feelings say otherwise ([Who I Am in Christ](https://www.iamreborn.net/who-i-am-in-christ)).

> Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
>
> — Matthew 11:28

## If you love someone who is depressed

Don't rush them with verses or tell them to just pray more. Be present. Ask how they're really doing, and listen. Help with practical things. Gently encourage them to see a doctor or counsellor. And if they talk about wanting to die, take it seriously every time — stay with them and help them contact 9-8-8 or emergency services.

> You can be held by God and still be hurting. Both are true at once — and He doesn't let go.

**If you're in the dark right now**

- **In crisis:** call or text 9-8-8 (Canada and US) or call 911.
- **Depression isn't a faith failure** — Elijah, Paul and the psalmists went through it.
- **Pray honestly,** even if all you can say is that it's dark (Psalm 88).
- **Get help:** a doctor, a counsellor, a pastor, a friend.
- **Look after your body:** rest, food, daylight — like God did for Elijah.
- **Hold on to “again”** (Psalm 42:11).

## Frequently asked questions

### Is depression a sin?

No. Depression is suffering, not sin. Faithful people in Scripture — Elijah, Paul, David and Jesus in Gethsemane — experienced deep anguish, and God responded with care rather than rebuke.

### Can a Christian take medication for depression?

Yes. When a doctor recommends it, medication is no more a failure of faith than glasses or insulin. Many believers find a combination of medical care, counselling, community and prayer helps most.

### What Bible verses help with depression?

Psalm 34:18, Psalm 42:11, Matthew 11:28, Lamentations 3:22–23 and Romans 8:38–39 are often a comfort. Psalm 88 shows that even a prayer with no resolution is heard.

### How can I help a friend who is depressed?

Be present and listen rather than rushing to fix it, help with practical needs, gently encourage them to see a doctor or counsellor, and always take talk of suicide seriously — stay with them and help them contact 9-8-8 or emergency services.
