## Short answer

The Bible teaches that death is real — an enemy that entered through sin (1 Corinthians 15:26) — but not the end: every person continues to exist and will face God (Hebrews 9:27). Those who trust Jesus go to be with Him at death (Luke 23:43; 2 Corinthians 5:8; Philippians 1:23). The final Christian hope is bodily resurrection and a new heaven and new earth when Jesus returns (1 Corinthians 15; Revelation 21:1–4). You can know you have eternal life by trusting Jesus, who promised that whoever believes “has passed from death to life” (John 5:24).

Sooner or later, everyone asks it — at a graveside, in a hospital corridor, or lying awake at night. _What happens when we die?_ It's not a morbid question. It may be the most honest one there is. And the Bible doesn't dodge it.

Christians hold some different views on the finer details, but Scripture is clear on the big things. Here they are, simply.

## Death is real — and it is an enemy

The Bible never pretends death is natural or beautiful. It entered the world through sin (Romans 5:12), and Paul calls it “the last enemy to be destroyed” (1 Corinthians 15:26). Grief is the right response to an enemy. Even Jesus wept at His friend's tomb (John 11:35). Christian hope doesn't erase grief; it changes it. We grieve, Paul says, but “not as others do who have no hope” (1 Thessalonians 4:13).

## Death is not the end of you

Scripture is clear that a person continues to exist after death. “It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). Every person will one day stand before God.

## For those who trust Jesus: with Christ

> Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
>
> — 2 Corinthians 5:8

Jesus told the dying thief beside Him, “Today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43). Paul said that to die is gain, because it means to “depart and be with Christ, for that is far better” (Philippians 1:21–23). For a believer, death is not falling into nothing. It's going home to the Lord.

## The final hope: resurrection, not just heaven

Many people picture eternity as souls floating in the clouds. The Bible's hope is much more solid. Being with Christ after death is wonderful — but it's not the final chapter. The final hope is **resurrection**: one day Jesus will return, the dead will be raised with real, renewed bodies, and God will make a new heaven and a new earth (1 Corinthians 15:42–44; Revelation 21:1).

> “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
>
> — 1 Corinthians 15:54–55

That's why the resurrection of Jesus matters so much. He is the first one raised, never to die again — the proof and the pattern of what's coming for everyone who belongs to Him (1 Corinthians 15:20).

> Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
>
> — John 11:25–26

## What will it be like?

- **With God.** “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man” (Revelation 21:3). The best part of eternity is not a place but a Person.
- **No more pain.** “He will wipe away every tear… neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore” (Revelation 21:4).
- **Real and physical.** Resurrected bodies, a renewed earth, real life — not a dim shadow of this one.
- **A prepared place.** Jesus said He goes to prepare a place for His people (John 14:2–3).

## What about those who reject God?

Jesus spoke plainly and soberly about judgment and eternal separation from God (Matthew 25:46). That is not a threat to manipulate anyone; it's a warning given in love by the One who died so that no one has to face it. God “desires all people to be saved” (1 Timothy 2:4).

## Can I know where I'll go?

> Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
>
> — John 5:24

Yes. Eternal life isn't earned by being good enough; it's a gift received by trusting Jesus, who died and rose again (Ephesians 2:8–9). > For those in Christ, death is not a wall. It's a door — and Jesus is standing on the other side of it.

## If you're grieving right now

Be gentle with yourself. Grief is love with nowhere to go, and God doesn't rush you through it. Let others carry you. Pray honestly — the Psalms are full of lament. And hold on to hope: for those who die in Christ, this is not goodbye forever. (There are verses and a prayer for you at [When You Feel Grieving](https://www.iamreborn.net/when-you-feel#grieving).)

**What happens when you die, in short**

- **Death is real** and an enemy — grief is right (1 Corinthians 15:26).
- **Everyone continues** and faces God (Hebrews 9:27).
- **Believers are with Christ** immediately (Luke 23:43; 2 Corinthians 5:8).
- **The final hope is resurrection** and a new creation (1 Corinthians 15; Revelation 21).
- **You can know** — eternal life is a gift through Jesus (John 5:24).

## Frequently asked questions

### Where do Christians go when they die?

To be with Christ. Jesus told the thief on the cross, “Today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43), and Paul described death as being “away from the body and at home with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8). Christians differ on some details, but agree believers are with the Lord.

### What is the resurrection?

The Bible's final hope: when Jesus returns, the dead will be raised with renewed bodies and God will make a new heaven and new earth (1 Corinthians 15:42–44; Revelation 21:1). Jesus' own resurrection is the first and the guarantee (1 Corinthians 15:20).

### Can I know if I will go to heaven?

Yes. Eternal life is a gift received by trusting Jesus, not earned (Ephesians 2:8–9). Jesus said whoever hears His word and believes “has eternal life… and has passed from death to life” (John 5:24).

### Is it wrong for Christians to grieve?

No. Jesus wept at His friend's tomb (John 11:35). Christians grieve, but “not as others do who have no hope” (1 Thessalonians 4:13).
