## Short answer

The kingdom of God is God's reign as King — His will done on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10). It was the centre of Jesus' preaching: “the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15). The kingdom has already come in Jesus (Luke 17:21) but is not yet complete; it will be fulfilled when He returns (Revelation 11:15). You enter by being born again (John 3:3), as God transfers you into the kingdom of His Son (Colossians 1:13). Jesus calls His followers to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33).

The kingdom of God was the centre of Jesus' preaching. It was the first thing He announced, the subject of most of His parables, and the first thing He taught His disciples to pray for. If you want to understand Jesus, you have to understand the kingdom.

> The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.
>
> — Mark 1:15

## What the kingdom of God is

The kingdom of God is **God's reign** — His rule as King, and the life, justice and peace that happen wherever His will is done. It's less a place on a map and more a reality: wherever Jesus is honoured as King, the kingdom is present. Matthew usually calls it "the kingdom of heaven," a phrase that means the same thing.

> Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
>
> — Matthew 6:10

Notice the parallel in Jesus' prayer: the kingdom coming means God's will being done. Heaven is where God's will is done perfectly; the kingdom is that reality breaking into earth (see [The Lord's Prayer Explained](https://www.iamreborn.net/blog/the-lords-prayer-explained)).

## Already here — and not yet complete

The Bible speaks about the kingdom in two ways at once. It has **already come** in Jesus: "the kingdom of God is in the midst of you" (Luke 17:21). His healings, forgiveness and victory over evil were signs that the King had arrived. Yet it is **not yet complete**. We still pray "your kingdom come," and we wait for the day when "the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever" (Revelation 11:15).

Living between those two realities explains a lot about the Christian life. God's reign is real and active now, so we expect to see Him at work. But it isn't finished, so we still face sin, suffering and death (see [Why Does God Allow Suffering?](https://www.iamreborn.net/blog/why-does-god-allow-suffering)).

## How you enter the kingdom

> Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.
>
> — John 3:3

You don't enter the kingdom by being good enough, religious enough or born into the right family. Jesus said you must be **born again** — made new by God's Spirit. That happens when you turn from sin and trust Jesus as King and Saviour. God "has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son" (Colossians 1:13). ## What the kingdom looks like

- **It's upside down.** The poor in spirit, the meek and the persecuted are called blessed (Matthew 5:3–10). The greatest is the servant (Mark 10:43–44).
- **It starts small and grows.** Jesus compared it to a mustard seed that becomes a tree, and to yeast working through dough (Matthew 13:31–33).
- **It's worth everything.** Like treasure hidden in a field, people gladly give up all to have it (Matthew 13:44).
- **It's not of this world.** "My kingdom is not of this world" (John 18:36) — it doesn't advance by force or politics but by truth and love.
- **It's marked by the Spirit.** "The kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit" (Romans 14:17).

> The kingdom isn't a place you wait to go. It's a King you follow now — and a world He's making new.

## How to seek the kingdom today

> But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
>
> — Matthew 6:33

1. **Make Jesus King of your day.** Begin by praying, "Your kingdom come, your will be done — in me today."
2. **Put His priorities first** in your time, money and decisions (see [What Does The Bible Say About Money?](https://www.iamreborn.net/blog/what-does-the-bible-say-about-money)).
3. **Bring the kingdom into your work.** Your job is a place to serve the King ([Kingdom Business](https://www.iamreborn.net/blog/kingdom-business-your-work-is-not-separate-from-your-worship)).
4. **Love the people around you.** Mercy, justice and kindness are signs of the King's reign.
5. **Announce the good news.** "This gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world" (Matthew 24:14). Start with your street ([The Great Commission Starts On Your Street](https://www.iamreborn.net/blog/the-great-commission-starts-on-your-street)).

**The kingdom of God, in short**

- **The kingdom of God** is God's reign — His will done on earth as in heaven (Matthew 6:10).
- **It came with Jesus** and will be complete when He returns (Luke 17:21; Revelation 11:15).
- **You enter by being born again** (John 3:3).

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the kingdom of God the same as the kingdom of heaven?

Yes. Matthew usually says “kingdom of heaven,” while Mark and Luke say “kingdom of God” in the same sayings of Jesus. Both refer to God's reign.

### Is the kingdom of God present now or in the future?

Both. It has already arrived in Jesus — “the kingdom of God is in the midst of you” (Luke 17:21) — and will be complete when He returns and reigns forever (Revelation 11:15).

### How do you enter the kingdom of God?

Jesus said, “Unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3). You enter by turning from sin and trusting Jesus, as God transfers you into the kingdom of His Son (Colossians 1:13).

### What does it mean to seek first the kingdom of God?

It means making God's reign and righteousness your first priority — in your time, money, work and relationships — and trusting Him to provide what you need (Matthew 6:33).
