## Short answer

Worship is responding to God as He truly deserves — declaring His worth, bowing before Him and giving Him your life. Everyone worships something; only God is worthy. Jesus said true worshippers worship the Father “in spirit and truth” (John 4:23–24): from the heart, according to who He really is. Romans 12:1 calls presenting your whole embodied life to God your spiritual worship, so worship includes singing and prayer but also your thinking, body, work and money — fuelled by gathering with other believers (Hebrews 10:24–25).

In a lot of churches, “worship” has come to mean the twenty minutes of songs before the sermon. Those songs matter. But if that's all worship is, then most of your week has nothing to do with it — and that's not how the Bible sees it at all.

Here's what worship really is, why everyone already does it, and how to make your whole life an offering to God.

## What worship means

The old English word _worship_ comes from “worth-ship” — declaring something's worth. The main Bible words carry the idea of bowing down and of serving. Put together, worship is **responding to God as He truly deserves**: honouring Him as worthy, bowing before Him, and giving Him your life.

> Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker!
>
> — Psalm 95:6

## Everyone worships something

The question isn't whether you worship but what. Whatever you give your best time, energy, money and hope to — success, comfort, a relationship, approval, your phone — that's what you worship. The Bible calls a worshipped substitute an idol. Idols always promise life and always disappoint. Only the living God is worthy of the weight we put on Him.

## Worship in spirit and truth

> But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.
>
> — John 4:23–24

Jesus said this to a woman who wanted to argue about the right mountain to worship on. He moved the question from _where_ to _how_. **In spirit** — from the heart, by the Holy Spirit, not just going through motions. **In truth** — according to who God actually is, as He has revealed Himself, not as we imagine Him. And notice: the Father is _seeking_ worshippers. Worship is a response to a God who comes looking for us.

## Your whole life is meant to be worship

> I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
>
> — Romans 12:1

Paul says your _body_ — your whole, embodied, Monday-to-Sunday life — is the offering. That means worship happens in the four places I AM REBORN talks about:

- **Spirit:** prayer, Scripture, singing, confession — time directly with God.
- **Mind:** what you think about and believe, brought into line with truth (Romans 12:2).
- **Body:** how you treat the temple of the Holy Spirit — sleep, food, strength (see [Fitness As Worship](https://www.iamreborn.net/blog/stewarding-the-temple-fitness-as-worship)).
- **Purpose:** your work, money and influence, done “in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Colossians 3:17) — see [Your Work Is Worship](https://www.iamreborn.net/blog/kingdom-business-your-work-is-not-separate-from-your-worship).

> Sunday worship isn't the whole of it. It's the gathering where a worshipping people remind each other who it's all for.

## Why gathered worship still matters

If all of life is worship, why bother with church? Because we were made to worship together. Scripture tells believers not to neglect meeting together (Hebrews 10:24–25) and to sing “psalms and hymns and spiritual songs” to one another (Colossians 3:16). Singing with others tunes your heart. Hearing God's Word preached reshapes your mind. Sharing communion reminds you of the gospel. Gathered worship fuels scattered worship. (Here's [how to find a good church](https://www.iamreborn.net/blog/how-to-find-a-good-church).)

## When you don't feel like worshipping

Worship isn't measured by how emotional you feel. Sometimes it's a “sacrifice of praise” (Hebrews 13:15) — choosing to declare God's worth when everything in you wants to complain. David often begins a psalm in despair and ends in praise, not because his circumstances changed but because he remembered who God is (Psalm 13). Feelings often follow faithfulness.

## Five ways to worship this week

1. **Start the day with thanks.** Before requests, name three things God has done.
2. **Sing alone.** In the car, in the shower. Let a song become a prayer.
3. **Offer your work.** Before you start, pray: “Lord, this is for You.”
4. **Train your body as stewardship,** not vanity — and thank God for it while you do.
5. **Give generously.** Giving is worship that says God is worth more than money.

**Worship, in short**

- **Worship** is responding to God as He deserves — declaring His worth (Psalm 95:6).
- **Everyone worships** something; only God is worthy of it.
- **In spirit and truth** — from the heart, according to who He really is (John 4:23–24).
- **Whole-life** — your body as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1).
- **Gathered worship** fuels the rest of the week (Hebrews 10:24–25).

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the biblical definition of worship?

Responding to God as He deserves: honouring His worth, bowing before Him and serving Him (Psalm 95:6). It includes songs and prayer but extends to presenting your whole life to Him (Romans 12:1).

### What does worship in spirit and truth mean?

Worship that comes from the heart by the Holy Spirit rather than empty ritual (spirit), and that is shaped by who God actually is as He has revealed Himself (truth) — John 4:23–24.

### Is worship only singing?

No. Singing is one important form, but Scripture describes worship as your whole life offered to God — your mind, body, work, money and obedience (Romans 12:1; Colossians 3:17).

### Why go to church if all of life is worship?

Because believers are made to worship together. Scripture warns against neglecting meeting together (Hebrews 10:24–25) and tells us to sing to one another (Colossians 3:16). Gathered worship fuels everyday worship.
