## Short answer

God says that everyone in Christ is a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17), a child of God who is loved and chosen (1 John 3:1; Ephesians 1:4), forgiven and free from condemnation (Romans 8:1), held secure by Him (John 10:28), and sent as His ambassador (2 Corinthians 5:20). Those things are true before you feel them. Scripture calls you to count them as true and renew your mind until your feelings catch up.

Everybody answers the question _who am I?_ — most of us just never say the answer out loud. We answer it with our job title, our follower count, our worst week, the thing a parent said when we were eleven, the sin we can't seem to shake. And whatever answer we settle on quietly runs everything else.

That is why identity is not a soft topic. It is the foundation. Build discipline on a broken answer and the discipline cracks. Build it on what God says, and it holds.

## Jesus heard who He was before He did anything

Before Jesus preached a sermon, healed a body or called a single disciple, He came up out of the water of the Jordan and heard the Father speak:

> And behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
>
> — Matthew 3:17

Notice the order. **Beloved** came first. **Well pleased** came before the ministry, not as a reward for it. And the very next scene is the wilderness, where the first words out of the tempter's mouth are an attack on exactly that: _“If you are the Son of God…”_ (Matthew 4:3).

The enemy has not changed his strategy. He rarely starts by tempting you to do something. He starts by asking whether you really are who God says you are. If he can win that argument, the behaviour follows on its own.

## Three voices compete to name you

- **Your past.** It says you are what you did, or what was done to you. It speaks in the past tense and expects you to live there.
- **Other people.** Approval, rejection, comparison. It is loud and it changes its mind every day, so anyone who lives by it is never finished.
- **Your performance.** It says you are as good as your last week. Good weeks make you proud; bad weeks make you hide. Either way, it's about you.

None of these voices is entirely lying — that is what makes them persuasive. Your past is real. People's opinions are real. Your performance matters. But none of them gets the final word on who you are, because none of them made you and none of them paid for you.

> The One who made you and bought you back is the only One with the authority to name you.

## What God actually says about you

The New Testament is remarkably specific here. It does not leave identity vague. Gather up what it says is true of everyone who is in Christ, and it falls into five clear statements:

**Five things that are already true**

- **I am made new.** A new creation, not a renovated old one (2 Corinthians 5:17).
- **I am loved.** A child of God, adopted, chosen before I did anything right (1 John 3:1; Ephesians 1:4).
- **I am free.** Forgiven, with no condemnation left to pay (Ephesians 1:7; Romans 8:1).
- **I am secure.** Held in a hand no one can pry open (John 10:28; Romans 8:38–39).
- **I am sent.** Salt, light and an ambassador of Christ where I already stand (Matthew 5:13–16; 2 Corinthians 5:20).

We have gathered thirty-one of these truths — one for every day of the month, each anchored to its passage — on a single page: [Who I Am in Christ](https://www.iamreborn.net/who-i-am-in-christ). Bookmark it. Print it. Read today's one before you open your phone.

> See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.
>
> — 1 John 3:1

John doesn't stop at _called_. He adds four short words, almost as if he can hear the reader's doubt: **and so we are.** It is not a nickname. It is a fact.

## “But I don't feel like it”

Most believers can recite these truths. The struggle is that they don't _feel_ them, so they assume they aren't really true for them. But feelings were never meant to be the judge. They are weather — real, worth paying attention to, and constantly changing. Your identity in Christ is not weather. It is ground.

Paul's instruction in Romans 6:11 is telling: _consider_ yourselves dead to sin and alive to God. He doesn't say _feel_ it. He says reckon it — count it as true because God says so, and keep counting until your feelings catch up. They usually do, but they come last.

> Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
>
> — Romans 12:2

Renewal is a process, and a mind is renewed the same way a path is worn across a field — by walking the new route again and again until it becomes the obvious one. (We go deeper on that in [How to Renew Your Mind](https://www.iamreborn.net/blog/how-to-renew-your-mind).)

## How to let it sink in

1. **One truth a day.** Not thirty-one at once. Read [today's declaration](https://www.iamreborn.net/who-i-am-in-christ), open the passage, and carry that one line with you.
2. **Say it out loud.** You are not hyping yourself up. You are agreeing with God out loud, and your own ears are part of the audience.
3. **Answer the specific lie.** Vague truth doesn't beat a specific lie. Name the exact thought that keeps coming back, and find the exact verse that answers it.
4. **Don't do it alone.** Tell one trusted believer which lie you're fighting. Identity is confirmed in family — that's part of why God put you in one.
5. **Act from it.** Make one decision today as the person God says you are: the forgiven one, the sent one, the one with nothing left to prove.

**Lie → truth**

- “I'm still that person.” → I am a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17).
- “God is disappointed in me.” → There is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1).
- “I have to earn my place.” → I was chosen before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4).
- “One more failure and He's done with me.” → No one can snatch me out of His hand (John 10:28).
- “My life doesn't matter much.” → I am God's workmanship, created for good works (Ephesians 2:10).

## Identity is the start, not the finish line

Knowing who you are is not meant to make you comfortable. It is meant to make you dangerous — in the best sense. People who are secure in the Father's love don't need to win every argument, don't need applause, and don't quit when things get hard. They are free to serve, to give, to forgive, and to go.

> For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
>
> — Ephesians 2:10

That is the whole I AM REBORN message in one verse: you are His workmanship _first_, and then you walk in the works. Identity, then discipline. Sonship, then mission. Get the order right, and the rest of the Christian life stops feeling like management and starts feeling like life.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does the Bible say about my identity in Christ?

That you are a new creation, a child of God, chosen, forgiven, free from condemnation, sealed with the Holy Spirit, held in God's hand and sent as Christ's ambassador. The New Testament presents these as facts about every believer, not rewards for the spiritually advanced.

### Why don't I feel like who God says I am?

Because feelings follow belief slowly. Romans 6:11 tells believers to consider themselves alive to God — to count it as true because He says so. Feelings are real but changeable; identity in Christ rests on what God has done, not on how a given day feels.

### Are identity declarations the same as positive affirmations?

No. An affirmation tries to make something true by repeating it. A biblical declaration agrees out loud with something God has already said and done, and it is only as strong as the passage under it — so always read the verse in context.
