Sometimes you're simply tired. Other times you're facing something bigger than you — illness, grief, temptation, a hard conversation, a long season. The Bible never tells you to find more strength inside yourself. It points you to a God who gives strength. These are the verses to stand on.
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Isaiah 41:10
When you feel weak
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
2 Corinthians 12:9
God's answer to Paul's weakness wasn't to remove it, but to fill it. Weakness isn't a disqualification. It's often the place where God's power is most visible.
He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.
Isaiah 40:29
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Psalm 73:26
When you're afraid
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.
Joshua 1:9
Joshua's courage wasn't based on his own ability. It was based on God's presence: "the LORD your God is with you." Strength follows presence (see What Does The Bible Say About Fear?).
For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
2 Timothy 1:7
When you're in trouble
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Psalm 46:1
The LORD is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped.
Psalm 28:7
The LORD is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.
Exodus 15:2
Strength for what God calls you to do
I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:13
This verse is often quoted before games and exams, but Paul wrote it about contentment — being able to face both plenty and hunger (Philippians 4:11–12). It's a promise that Christ will give you strength for whatever He brings you through, not a guarantee of winning (see How To Be Content).
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.
Ephesians 6:10
Paul says this right before describing the armor of God. Spiritual strength is "in the Lord" — received, not manufactured (read The Armor Of God Explained).
When you're worn out
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28
The joy of the LORD is your strength.
Nehemiah 8:10
Sometimes the strongest thing you can do is rest. God built rest into creation for a reason (see Sleep Is A Spiritual Discipline).
You don't need to be strong enough. You need to stay close to the One who is.
How to draw on God's strength
- Admit you're weak. Strength from God starts with honesty, not pretending (2 Corinthians 12:9).
- Ask for it. "Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence continually" (1 Chronicles 16:11).
- Stay in the Word. Read one of these verses each morning this week.
- Look after your body. Sleep, food and movement matter; God made you whole (Fitness As Worship).
- Lean on others. God often sends strength through people.
Scripture, a prayer and a next step for anxiety, fear, weariness and more.
