Every man is being shaped by something. The culture hands him a few options: be harmless, be dominant, be distracted, or check out. None of them produces a man who is strong and good at the same time — a man his family can lean on, his friends can trust and his community is better for.
The Bible offers something different. Not a stereotype, but a person: Jesus — the strongest man who ever lived, who used every ounce of that strength to serve. Becoming a godly man means becoming more like Him.
Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.
1 Corinthians 16:13–14
Notice the pairing. Be strong — and let all that you do be done in love. Strength without love becomes harshness. Love without strength becomes passivity. A godly man carries both.
Seven marks of a godly man
1. He walks with God first
Everything else flows from here. A godly man doesn't just believe in God; he spends time with Him — in Scripture, in prayer, in honest confession. Before he leads anyone else, he lets himself be led. (Start with How To Grow Closer To God.)
He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
Micah 6:8
2. He owns his sin
Adam's first move after sin was to hide and blame. A godly man does the opposite: he comes into the light, says “that was me,” and makes it right. Humility isn't weakness. It takes real strength to admit you were wrong — to God, to your wife, to your kids, to your team. (See What Is Repentance?)
3. He uses his strength to serve
Jesus, knowing He had all authority, took a towel and washed His disciples' feet (John 13:3–5). That's the pattern. A godly man's strength — physical, financial, relational — exists for the good of others. He protects the vulnerable, he provides, and he goes first into the hard thing.
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.
Ephesians 5:25
If you're married, that's the bar: not “be in charge,” but give yourself up. If you're single, the same call applies to how you treat every woman, every friend and every person under your influence.
4. He trains — body and soul
Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
1 Timothy 4:7–8
Paul assumes physical training is worth something — and then points to a higher training. A godly man doesn't neglect either. He takes care of the body God gave him so he has energy to serve, and he trains his soul with even more seriousness. Discipline in one area tends to strengthen the other. (Read Fitness As Worship.)
5. He works hard and keeps his word
Whatever he does, he works at it with all his heart, as for the Lord (Colossians 3:23). He shows up. He finishes. When he says yes, it means yes (Matthew 5:37). Reliability is one of the most underrated forms of godliness — and one of the most noticed.
6. He guards his mind and his eyes
A godly man knows the battle for purity and integrity is won or lost in private. He's honest about his temptations, he cuts off access to what pulls him down, and he doesn't fight alone. (If lust is the battle, read How To Overcome Lust As A Christian.)
7. He has brothers
Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.
Proverbs 27:17
Many men have plenty of acquaintances and no one who really knows them. A godly man has at least one or two brothers who can ask him hard questions and get honest answers — and he does the same for them. Isolation is where men drift. Brotherhood is where they're sharpened.
Strength without love becomes harshness. Love without strength becomes passivity. Jesus was both — and He's making you both.
Where to start this week
- Meet with God before your phone — ten minutes of Scripture and honest prayer, every morning.
- Own one thing. Apologise to someone you've wronged, without excuses.
- Serve one person at home in a way that costs you something.
- Train your body three times this week, and offer it to God as worship.
- Call one brother and ask him how he's really doing — then tell him how you are.
You won't do all of this perfectly, and you don't have to. Godliness is grown, not performed — and it grows from grace, not guilt. Jesus doesn't just give you a standard. He gives you His Spirit to become it (Who Is The Holy Spirit?).

Common questions
What are the qualities of a godly man?
He walks with God, owns his mistakes, uses his strength to serve, trains his body and soul, works hard and keeps his word, guards his mind and purity, and has close brothers in faith.
What does the Bible say about being a man?
Paul writes, “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love” (1 Corinthians 16:13–14). Biblical manhood pairs strength with love, modelled on Jesus.
How can a man grow closer to God?
Start each day with Scripture and honest prayer before your phone, confess sin quickly, serve the people closest to you, and walk with other believers who will ask how you're really doing.
Does physical fitness matter to God?
Paul says bodily training is of some value and godliness is of value in every way (1 Timothy 4:8). Caring for your body is stewardship that gives you energy to serve — but training the soul matters even more.
