How To Lead Someone To Christ: What To Say When They're Ready

Ask the question. Then wait.

Most Christians have been close to this moment and backed away from it. A friend opens up. A coworker asks a real question. Someone you've prayed for for years finally says, “I think I want what you have.” And you freeze — not because you don't care, but because nobody ever showed you what to do next.

This is that walkthrough. Not a script to perform, but a simple way to help someone cross from interest to faith — and then not leave them alone on the other side.

First: it isn't on you

You can't argue anyone into the kingdom, and you don't have to. Paul, the greatest evangelist in history, described his part like this:

I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.

1 Corinthians 3:6

Your job is to be faithful and clear. The Holy Spirit's job is to open hearts. That takes enormous pressure off — and it frees you to be warm, honest and unhurried instead of anxious to close a deal. (If you're earlier in the conversation than this, start with How To Share Your Faith Without Being Weird.)

Recognise the moment

People rarely say “I'm ready to be saved.” They say things like: “How do you have so much peace?” “I've been thinking about God a lot lately.” “Do you think He'd even want someone like me?” Those are open doors. The most loving thing you can do is gently walk through them instead of changing the subject.

Explain the good news simply

Don't reach for theology words. Use four plain movements, each with a verse you can point to:

  1. God made you and loves you. You are not an accident (John 3:16).
  2. Sin has separated us from Him. All of us have gone our own way, and we can't fix it ourselves (Romans 3:23; 6:23).
  3. Jesus died for you and rose again. He took what we deserved, so we could receive what we don't (Romans 5:8; 1 Corinthians 15:3–4).
  4. Turn and trust Him. Turn from sin, trust Jesus as Saviour, follow Him as Lord (Romans 10:9).

We've laid this out on one page — the four movements, the verses, a prayer, and next steps — at iamreborn.net/born-again. You can read it together on your phone, or send it to them afterwards so they can come back to it alone.

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

Romans 1:16

Ask the question — then wait

This is the step most of us skip. We explain everything and then never actually ask. Ask kindly and directly: “Would you like to turn from your sin and trust Jesus today?”

Then stop talking. Silence feels long, but it's often where the Spirit is working. Don't rescue the moment with a joke or a change of subject. Let them answer.

If they say yes: pray with them

Explain that there are no magic words — God hears the heart — and offer to pray with them. Some people want to pray in their own words; others are grateful to repeat a simple prayer after you, a line at a time. Either is fine. Something like:

Jesus, I come to You as I am. I've sinned and I can't fix myself. I believe You died for me and rose again. I turn from my sin and I trust You. Come and be my Lord. Amen.

Then celebrate. Jesus said there is joy in heaven over one sinner who repents (Luke 15:10). Let them see some of that joy on your face too.

If they say “not yet”

Thank them for being honest. Ask what's holding them back — a question, a fear, a cost — and take it seriously. Don't push and don't disappear. Keep praying, keep loving, keep the door open. Many people who say “not yet” come back months later, and they come back to the person who didn't make them feel like a project.

The first 30 days matter most

Leading someone to Christ is not the finish line — it's a birth. And newborns need care. The biggest mistake well-meaning Christians make is celebrating the decision and then leaving a brand-new believer to figure everything out alone.

  1. Follow up within 48 hours. A text, a coffee, a call: “How are you doing since we prayed?”
  2. Give them assurance. Doubts often come the next morning. Walk through how they can know they're saved.
  3. Read the Bible together. Start with the Gospel of John — a chapter at a time. The First 30 Days plan gives you a question for each day.
  4. Bring them to church. Don't send them; bring them. Sit with them. Introduce them to people.
  5. Talk about baptism. It's the first step of obedience Jesus gives. Here's what it means.
  6. Teach them who they are now. Read one truth a day together from Who I Am in Christ.

This is what Jesus meant by making disciples, not just converts (Matthew 28:19–20). The goal is not a moment. It's a person who follows Jesus for life — and one day leads someone else to Him.

But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.

Common questions

What do I say to someone who wants to become a Christian?

Explain the good news in four plain steps — God loves them, sin separates us from Him, Jesus died and rose for them, and they respond by turning from sin and trusting Him — then ask directly: “Would you like to trust Jesus today?” If they say yes, pray with them.

Do they have to pray the sinner's prayer?

No prayer has power in its exact words; God responds to a heart that repents and believes. A short prayer can help someone put that into words, and many people appreciate repeating one line at a time after you.

What should a new Christian do first?

Make sure they know they are saved, start reading the Gospel of John, get connected to a local church, and talk about being baptized. Whoever led them to Christ should follow up within 48 hours and stay close for the first month.

What if they say they're not ready?

Thank them for their honesty, ask what is holding them back, and take it seriously. Keep praying, keep loving them and keep the door open — without pushing and without disappearing.
