What Is Sin? The Bible's Honest Diagnosis — And Its Cure

Honest diagnosis. Real cure.

Sin is an unpopular word. Many people picture a list of rules, a finger-wagging preacher, or guilt that never goes away. But you can't understand the good news of Jesus without understanding the bad news it answers. The Bible's diagnosis of sin is honest, and its cure is better than you'd expect.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

Romans 3:23

What sin is

Sin is anything in what we do, say, think, or fail to do that goes against God's character and His will. At its root, sin is putting ourselves in God's place — choosing our way over His. The most common New Testament word for sin (Greek hamartia) is often explained as "missing the mark": falling short of what we were made to be.

  • Breaking God's law — "sin is lawlessness" (1 John 3:4).
  • Falling short — missing the glory of God we were made to reflect (Romans 3:23).
  • Leaving good undone — "whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin" (James 4:17).
  • Coming from the heart — "out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander" (Matthew 15:19).

That last point matters. Sin isn't only actions. Jesus traced it back to the heart — the desires and motives underneath what we do. That's why we can't fix it with better behaviour alone.

Where sin came from

God made the world good. Sin entered when the first humans chose to distrust God and take what He had withheld (Genesis 3). "Sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned" (Romans 5:12). Since then every human heart has been bent the same way. Nobody has to be taught to be selfish.

What sin does

  • It separates us from God. "Your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God" (Isaiah 59:2).
  • It brings death. "The wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23) — spiritual death now and eternal separation if it's never dealt with.
  • It enslaves. "Everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin" (John 8:34). What promises freedom ends in chains.
  • It damages relationships — with God, with others and with ourselves.

The good news: Jesus deals with sin

For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

2 Corinthians 5:21

This is the heart of the gospel. Jesus lived the sinless life we couldn't, then died the death our sin deserved. He took our sin; we receive His righteousness. The same verse that says "the wages of sin is death" goes on: "but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23). For the whole story, read What Is The Gospel?

The bad news is worse than you thought. The good news is better than you dreamed.

What to do with your sin

  1. Stop hiding it. Adam and Eve hid. Grace starts when we stop pretending.
  2. Confess it to God. "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).
  3. Turn from it. That's repentance — a change of mind and direction (What Is Repentance?).
  4. Receive forgiveness — and forgive yourself. If God has cleansed you, don't keep yourself on trial (How To Forgive Yourself).
  5. Fight it with God's help. "Sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace" (Romans 6:14).

If you keep falling into the same sin, you're not alone and you're not beyond hope. Read Why Do I Keep Struggling With The Same Sin?

Common questions

What is the biblical definition of sin?

Sin is anything that goes against God's character and will — in action, word, thought or neglect. Scripture calls it lawlessness (1 John 3:4) and falling short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).

Has everyone sinned?

Yes. “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Since sin entered the world through Adam, every human heart has been bent the same way (Romans 5:12).

Can every sin be forgiven?

Jesus said every sin will be forgiven except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (Mark 3:28–29), which many understand as a settled, final refusal of the Spirit's witness to Jesus. If you are worried you have committed it, that concern is itself a sign the Spirit is still drawing you. Anyone who comes to Jesus will be received (John 6:37).

How do I get forgiveness for my sins?

Confess them to God and turn to Jesus. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
